Sayings of out wonderful new leader:-
"I went to Dewsbury, winter before last, in the height of the energy prices going up, And spoke to an 84 year old woman, worked all her life, obviously now a pensioner. And she told me that she doesn't get out of bed till midday, because she didn't want to turn the heating on. And then when she did get in out of bed, she had this sort of thermal jacket that she just wore all day long, so she didn't have to put the heating up very high.
That's an awful position to put a pensioner in. And there are just too many of those stories. Another pensioner was, actually, we had a group of them in in Dewsbury, was describing to me going around the supermarket, and picking something up, and looking at the price, and then putting it back on the shelf"
Exactly how will taking a paltry couple of hundred quid help them or the economy? 😡 😡 😡

It would appear that despite acknowledging you can't spend your way out of debt or recession, Starmer is to increase capital spending. well done him and well done Reeves. seems her economic qualification has stopped working...

After many years of Labour blathering on about neoliberal policies and how they and trickledown economics don't work, it seems magically they do if Labour are the ones implementing them.
A revert to Blairs PFI looks to be on the cards despite the fact the debt is crippling the NHS.
Of all the things that really need renationalising he chose the railways, much the delight of the dictatorial RMT and ASLEF unions who immediately launched plans to strike for more money. Understandable really, how anyone is expected to manage on drivers pay of only £75,000 is anyone's guess.
So how do they get the population to accept what they do? Hint interminably about the draconian actions they plan and the dire need to make 'difficult decisions'. Then when they finally reveal their polices and they are not as bad as they led us to believe, we all breathe a sigh of relief and say, "ah well that's all right then". :-\ :-\

Some believe the UK is becoming more authoritarian. There have been new laws, like the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023, which give police more power and make peaceful protest illegal.
People are also concerned about voter ID laws and changes to electoral boundaries, thinking these might harm democracy.
Disagree or protest at your peril.

Is it me or did I call it right?
The terrible, draconian budget of 'tough decision' we feared have actually little effect on most (on the surface), so we can all breathe a collective sigh pf relief; 'it's not as bad as we thought so we won't criticise too harshly'. But is there a sting in the tail? One thing she has done is not to raise taxes, but just the opposite - a minimum pay rise. Whoopee, err except youngsters particularly and some others will now earn enough to start paying tax and quite possibly take home less than they do now.
Will employers really swallow paying more in wages and a big hike in NI contributions? or will they do what they always do and pass the cost on by raising prices. And what does raising prices do? increases the amount of VAT flowing into the coffers of HMG.

Looking at the news today is depressing. Israel, Georgia, Ukraine, most of the horn of Africa and much of Central and East Africa are in conflict Now South Korea has made an astonishing declaration of martial law.
To my mind authoritarianism is on the rise, massively so and we're doing nothing to stop it or the erosion of democracy. However, we must be good little sheeples and accept our rulers’ decisions without question. Nor shall we discuss politics openly.
Starmer, and it must be said his predecessors, through a whole tranche of legislations, are and have been quietly chipping away at our freedoms and rights whilst we sleepwalk into an autocracy.
. Though many see the press as an arm of the right, a free press is absolutely essential, yet we’re allowing it to be shackled.
Some examples of the curtailment we live under:
National Security Act 2023 which lacks the test for public interest, this means that even reporting on matters of significant public concern could result in criminal liability if the authorities say it involves sensitive information. ‘Sensitive’ it must be said is not defined – catch 22?
The Investigatory Powers Act 2016. Expanded Surveillance Powers: This law gives the government broad surveillance powers, including access to journalists' communications and data.
Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019
Criminalizes viewing or accessing certain online material related to terrorism, even for research or reporting purposes. It also expands stop-and-search powers at borders, allowing authorities to seize journalistic materials.
Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and The Public Order Act 2023 gave police expanded powers to restrict protests, including those deemed too noisy or disruptive. We’ve all seen the stop oil etc and many of us disagree with their actions, BUT the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental requisite of democracy.
Judicial Reforms, Proposals to limit the scope of judicial reviews and limit the courts facility to assessing whether government actions are lawful.

Trump's first suggestion to purchase Greenland in 2019 garnered worldwide attention and was officially mooted as possession being of strategic interest in the Arctic. Given the region's increasing geopolitical value due to climate change, natural resources, and strategic military positioning, control is increasingly important.
The United States has long expressed concerns about paying a disproportionate share of NATO costs. Trump, in particular demanded increased defence spending in 2019 from member countries, echoing Obama's sentiment that "we are not the world's policeman." No doubt he will raise the matter again in the near future.
The point I’m making, is whether Trump really is a megalomanic or quite clever in making Denmark and NATO take their roles and responsibilities more seriously.
